<머신러닝(Do you love me?)>(2021)은 무용수가 기계의 동작을 해석하고 자신의 관절에 대입하여 새로운 움직임을 선보이는 퍼포먼스 작업이다. 기계의 움직임에 대해 자세히 살펴보고 일종의 패턴을 만들어서 인간의 몸에 입히는 과정은 기계도 아니고 인간의 움직임도 아닌 새로운 혼종의 움직임을 만들어낸다. 작업에서 기계 움직임의 기본이 되는 것은 생산 공장에서 일하고 있는 로봇팔의 움직임과 보스턴 다이나믹스에서 2020년 12월 발표한 로봇춤(Do You Love Me?)이다. 기계의 동작은 인간이 기존에 움직이는 방식과는 확연히 다르다. 따라서 무용수는 기계의 움직임의 형태에 대해 배우고 해석하는 과정을 거쳐 자신의 감각과 생각을 몸으로 표현한다. 즉 자신의 신체 언어로 기계의 언어를 해석하여 ‘몸짓’으로 드러내는 것이다.

인간은 기계의 언어를 자신의 몸의 언어로 ‘번역’을 할 수 있을까? 나아가 자신의 몸을 매개로 기계의 동작을 새로운 몸짓으로 ‘창의적인 번역’을 할 수 있을까? 작품에서 등장하는 무용수는 기계 동작의 형태, 역동성에 대한 기억을 바탕으로 기계의 움직임을 모방하는 동시에 자기 자신의 형상을 독창적으로 드러낸다. 무용수의 몸은 단순한 육신이 아니다. 무용수는 그의 삶의 과정, 경험으로 형성된 특정한 정서에 의해 몸짓을 구현한다. 작품 속 무용수는 기계의 동작을 일정한 방식으로 전달하고 재현하는 것을 넘어서, 특수한 기계의 움직임의 변별적 자질들을 섬세하게 포착하여 기계 움직임의 어떤 잠재성을 일구어 낸다. 그리고 마침내 무용수는 기계언어의 메아리를 울려 새로운 혼종의 몸짓으로 ‘재창안’한다. 그렇다면 작품 안에서 기계의 몸짓이 인간의 몸짓으로 전환되는 과정에서 어떤 정동이 발생되고 있을까? 이 혼종의 몸짓은 인간과 기계의 몸의 어느 경계에 있는가.

Machine Learning (Do you love me?) (2021) is a performance art where dancers translate the movement of machine and adopt it into their bodies to ultimately present the new movement. Through studying the machine movement and creating a kind of pattern to adopt it into their bodies, they produced the convergence of the movement which is neither machine movement nor human movement. The foundation of the movement of machine in the performance is the movement of robotic arms in a manufacturing plant and robot dance(Do You Love Me?) unveiled by Boston Dynamics in December 2020. The movement of machine is distinct from the one of human. Therefore, dancers express what they feel and think after learning and interpreting the movement of machine. This means after interpreting the language of machine, they present ‘gestures’ with the language of their bodies.

Can humans “translate” the movement of machine with the language of their body? Can they conduct a “creative translation” of the machine movement into a new gesture with their body as a medium? ‘In the performance, the dancers imitate the movement of machine based on their memories of how it moves and its dynamics while expressing themselves in a creative manner. It is only natural because their bodies are not just physical bodies, and their gestures are produced by the unique sentiment which was formed throughout their lives and experiences. Going beyond conveyance and reproduction of the machine movement in a certain way, the dancers realize potential of the machine movement by capturing distinctive feature of the movement. Finally, the dancers “recreate” new heterogeneous gestures by unlocking the essence of the language of machine. What kind of affect we can see in the process of transformation from the machine movement to the human movement? Where the heterogeneous gestures are? Human or machine?
