<보이지 않는 차원>(2017)은 인간과 비인간 사이의 관계성, 유기성, 그로 인해 파생 가능한 가능성을 인간 무용수의 몸짓으로 드러낸 영상 작업이다. 작품은 흑백의 이미지에 배경은 최소한으로 남기고 무용수의 움직임을 가까이 조명하며 몸짓을 면밀히 살피는 시선을 강조한다. 사회 구성원의 하나로서 ‘개인’을 내러티브의 대상이자 화자로 등장시키며 작품이 다루는 질문을 움직임과 신체성을 통해 은유적으로 표현한다. 작품 속 무용수의 몸짓은 분석적인 접근의 측면보다 영상의 시선의 범위와 그 속도에서 더 잘 드러난다. 그리고 작품은 영상의 연속성에 의도적으로 균열을 내고 재배치하는 구조를 가진다. 여러 흑백 이미지가 조금씩 밀려나거나 어긋나는 독특한 이미지 편집 방식을 취하는 이 방식은 보이지 않는 관계들이 영상 화면 밖에서도 연속성을 갖고 있음을 연상시킨다.

작품 속 무용수의 비선형적인 몸짓은 인간과 비인간의 관계성과 이 두 대상의 관계에서 파생되는 사회적 현상에 대해 담담하게 서술하듯 드러낸다. 그의 몸의 언어가 전달하고 있는 것은 어떤 내용이나 정보가 아니라 현상이 가진 전체적이고 내면적인 본질이다. 작품 안에서 무용수는 현상에 대한 자신의 기억을 외면화하여 새로운 ‘몸짓’으로 ‘재창안’한다. 그의 몸에 각인되어 있던 잠재 기억이 ‘몸짓’으로 ‘번역’되어 해방되는 것이다. 그리고 무용수의 몸짓은 내용의 모든 전달을 넘어 인간과 비인간 사이의 현상 속 본질 안에서 갇혀 있는 잠재성을 일구어 낸다. 이로써 그의 몸짓은 두 대상의 관계에 대한 내러티브를 섬세하게 포착하고 고유한 리듬의 몸짓으로 드러냄으로써 현상의 본질의 독특한 울림을 전한다. 나아가 작품 속 흑백 이미지가 겹겹이 중첩되어 얽힌 구조로 결합된 편집 방식은 인간과 비인간의 사이 보이지 않는 경계의 이미지를 상기시키며, 새로운 감각의 차원으로 진입하는 어떤 통로를 상징하는 듯하다.

The hidden dimension (2017) is a video art presenting gestures of a human dancer to demonstrate relationships and interrelation between human and non-human as well as its potential possibility. As black-and-white images and the empty backdrop allow the video to highlight the movement of the dancer, the audience can follow the viewpoint to closely look at the movement. Featuring an “individual” in a society as a subject and narrator, the work uses a metaphor to throw a question through the movement and the body. Gestures of the dancer have a significant meaning in terms of scope and speed of the viewpoint rather an analytic approach. The work has the structure to intentionally crack and realign the video’s continuity. The structure has a unique editing style where different black-and-white images are gradually pushed out or cross each other, which enables the audience to imagine that invisible relationships are continuous even outside of the screen.

The nonlinear gestures of the dancer in the video gently describe relations between human and non-human, and a social phenomenon derived from their relationships. What the language of her body delivers is a whole and inner essence of a phenomenon rather than a story or information. In the performance, the dancer brings out her memories of the phenomenon to “recreate” it with a new gesture, which means her dormant memories engraved in her body are “translated” into “gestures” and finally set free. Going beyond all the conveyance of the content, the dancer’s gestures realize the potential that is trapped within the essence of the phenomenon between human and non-human. Capturing a phenomenon and reproducing it as a unique rhythmical gesture, the dancer gives a unique resonance of the essence of the phenomenon to the audience. Furthermore, the editing method, in which the black-and-white images are overlapped and combined in the layered structure, reminds the audience of the image of the invisible boundary between human and non-human. It also seems to be a symbol of a path to enter a new dimension of sense.
