CURATOR’S PREFACE
우리는 살아가면서 경험이 쌓이고, 그 기억들이 모여 현재의 나를 만든다. 수없이 스치는 기억들은 빈틈없이 몸에 스며든다. 몸은 과거와 현재에 이르기까지 나의 기억이 각인된 기억의 저장고이다. 몸에는 시간적 경험이 남기는 정서의 여운이 강하게 묻어나게 된다. 몸에 각인된 이 기억들은 감각으로 번지고 몸의 감각은 고유한 언어가 된다. 그리고 경험의 정서와 내면의 감각은 몸의 움직임의 유기적인 요소들을 통해 표현된다. 이 일련의 과정을 ‘몸짓’으로 명명한다. ‘몸짓’은 자신 속에 숨어있는 가상성이 수많은 저항을 뚫고 어떤 리듬과 형태로 실현되는 신체의 움직임이다. 이때 ‘몸짓’은 몸이라는 물질을 통해 나의 내면을 전달하는 ‘언어’이고 순수한 의미에서 ‘매체’이다. 나아가 몸의 언어는 내면 속에 잠재하는 순수한 기억의 원천을 다시 끄집어내어 새로이 ‘몸짓’으로 재창안한다. 그리고 비로소 몸에 각인되어 있던 잠재 기억은 ‘몸짓’으로 ‘번역’되어 해방된다.
‘몸짓’의 수행자로서 인간과 기술적 대상의 ‘창의적인 번역’의 가능성과 한계를 살펴보고자 한다. ‘몸짓’은 내면 안에서 충돌하고 섞이는 기억, 정체성들이 몸의 움직임으로 표출되는 것이다. ‘창의적인 번역’은 고유한 언어를 섬세하게 포착하는, 언어의 내용을 전달하는 차원을 넘어서 어떤 잠재성을 일구어내는 실천적인 행위이다. 《지나친 몸짓들: 메아리를 깨워 울려 퍼지게 하느냐》는 인간과 비인간의 경계와 사이의 ‘몸짓’을 들여다보고, 몸의 언어로 번역되는 몸짓이 내포하고 있는 의미를 탐색하는 전시이다. 이번 전시는 ‘몸짓’을 전면으로 드러내는 신이피, 전보경, TEAM AI-GO의 작업을 소개한다. 총 세 작품 모두 형용할 수 없는 상황을 몸짓으로 재현하는 방식을 특성으로 가진다. 작품 속 움직임의 형태에는 각각 다른 헤아림의 방식으로 여러 은유적 표현이 드러나는 것이 특징이다. 각 작품 속 ‘몸짓’들은 각각의 고유한 리듬으로 어떤 언어적 울림을 줄 수 있을까?
전시에서 선보이는 인공지능의 몸짓은 ‘창의적인 번역’을 수행하지 못하고 다른 작품에서 드러나는 인간의 몸짓과 대비되는 양상을 보인다. 근본적으로 인공지능은 인간이 그러하듯 감각적 지각으로 미적 경험과 감성을 섬세하게 포착하고 헤아릴 수 없는 존재이다. 그러나 인공지능이 창의성의 새로운 경계를 두드리며 인간과의 관계 안에서 하나의 존재양식으로서 나아가는 것은 의심치 않다. 인공지능이 시도하는 모든 기교는 인간의 진화능력을 가장 구체적으로 보이는 일종의 양식이다. 그리고 인공지능과 같은 기술적 대상은 자신의 개별 구조나 작동 방식으로 인간과 관계를 맺으며 개별적인 존재로 나아가고 있다. 본 전시를 통해 인간과 기술적 대상의 본질적인 차이에 근거하여, 궁극적으로 두 대상이 어떻게 관계를 맺는지 그리고 우리는 이 양상을 어떻게 바라보아야 할지 생각해 보는 기회가 되기를 바란다.

As we live, we gain experiences and memories, and those memories make us who we are. Countless memories occupy every single part of our bodies, which makes our bodies a storage of memory that contains our entire memories from the past to the present. That led our bodies to have strong sentiment that is left from our experiences. The memories engraved in our bodies spread to our senses, and the senses of our bodies eventually become a unique language. Sentiment of experience and our inner sense is expressed by organic factors of body movement. This process is called “gesture”. “Gesture” is a movement of a body that virtuality deep inside us overcomes numerous resistances to realize rhythm and shape. In this context, “gesture” plays a role as a “language” that conveys our inner selves through our bodies as well as a “medium” itself. Moreover, bringing back dormant sources of pure memories from our inner self, our bodies recreate them into new “gestures”. Finally, subconsciousness which has been engraved in our bodies gets to be released as it is “translated” into “gesture”.
The exhibition serves as a venue to understand the possibility and limit of a “creative translation” that is generated by human and non-human as a gesture producer. “Gesture” is a body movement to express memories and identities that collide and mix in our inner selves. “Creative translation” is a practical act that captures a unique language and creates a certain potential beyond just conveying of the content of the language. Boundless Gesture: Resonate with You is organized to examine ‘gesture’ between human and nonhuman and explore the meaning of gesture which is translated into a language of a body. With the subject of “gesture”, the exhibition introduces three artworks by Ifie Sin, Bokyung Jun, and TEAM AI-GO. A common thread through all these works is that they reproduce an indescribable situation in gesture. Movement of each work holds a variety of metaphors in different ways of understanding. Can each ‘gesture’ from the works resonate with the audience with its unique rhythm?
Gestures of AI in the exhibition failed in a creative translation, far from gestures of humans in human-generated artworks. But, unlike humans, AI is fundamentally not able to capture and understand aesthetic experiences and sense delicately with its sensuous perception. But there is no doubt that technical objects are moving toward a way of existence in a relationship with humans, pushing their boundaries to be more creative. All AI-generated techniques are a kind of pattern which is the best demonstration of a human capability to evolve. Technical object such as AI makes its way as an individual being as building relationships with humans by utilizing its individual structure or operation method. The exhibition can be an opportunity for the audience to think how human and non-human forge relations based on the fundamental difference between human and technical objects, throwing a question how we should understand it.
